Yarborough (American, 1912-2005) is credited as being the father of the Green Berets. A WWII airborne commander and designer of the U.S. paratrooper's badge, jumpboots and the M42 paratrooper uniform, Yarborough helped define America's special operations capabilities. In 1961, President Kennedy appointed him personally to lead the U.S. Army Special Warfare Center, tasking him with expanding and institutionalizing the role of Special Forces in global Cold War strategy.
