William Pelham Yarborough, one of the most consequential military leaders of the 20th century. This flag is from an important period in the general's career. Yarborough (American, 1912-2005) is credited as being the father of the Green Berets. In 1961, while Yarborough was a brigadier general, President John F. Kennedy appointed him personally to lead the U.S. Army Special Warfare Center, tasking him with expanding and institutionalizing the role of Special Forces in global Cold War strategy.
