"Folio (300 x 200 mm), late 18th cent. half brown calf with corners, title in on red morocco label at spine, nice 18th c. coloured paper on boards (binding somewhat worn), a brown stain at inner margin at bottom (heavier at beginning and at the end), else generally in good condition, with wide margins. Early ownership ms. entries (also cancelled) on first leaf. Collation of the present copy. A6-B6, C4-D4 (lacking D4 blank), AA-CC6, DD4, ?6, ??8. A-Y6, Z4, &4; lacking ff. L3-4 (ff. LXIII-LXIV) and &4 blank; ff. M5-6 re-margined, from a shorter copy. So ff. [20], [21 of 22], [14], numb. CXXXVIII, [1 blank missing]. Colophon and register at recto of penultimate leaf, here present. Text printed in Latin and Greek, beautifully illustrated with 36 woodcut musical diagrams (half-page or full-page) in the section containing ‘De musica (from f. XXVI verso, to LIX recto).
First edition, very rare, of this interesting Latin translation of Plutarch's ‘De virtute morali’, also containing the famous and influential comments on the apocryphal Plutarch's ‘De musica’.
