Pair of Japanese Meiji Era Black Lacquer Boxes with Brass Fittings - This is a pair of Japanese Meiji Era black lacquer boxes, each adorned with ornate brass fittings and decorative elements. The larger box features a sleek, unadorned exterior with intricate brass corner guards, side panels, and feet, suggesting a formal or ceremonial purpose. The interior of this box is lined with a beige paper featuring a delicate, abstract pattern. The smaller box is distinguished by a gilded Japanese character on one side and is similarly embellished with brass fittings, including diamond-shaped accents on its legs. The interior of the smaller box is lined with a patterned paper featuring a repeating floral or starburst motif in blue and reddish-brown on a cream background.
