Jim LEWK '80 Signed Mixed-Metal Mailbox Garden Sculpture - Signed mixed-metal sculptural assemblage depicting a rural mailbox amid a stylized picket fence and flowering garden. The work is formed from hand-worked copper-toned and brass-toned metal components, including a small raised-flag mailbox, cylindrical support, tubular fence uprights, and dimensional floral stems with serrated leaves. It is mounted on an irregular pale stone or composite base fitted with a green felt underside. The front of the base is visibly signed and dated “LEWK ’80,” indicating a 1980 execution. The sculpture presents a warm range of copper, bronze, and gold-colored surface tones, with darkened soldered or welded joins that reinforce its handcrafted character. Viewable from all sides, it is a distinctive small-scale metalwork sculpture suited to a desk, shelf, or display cabinet. After moving to Miami, he studied art at the University of Miami, Florida State University, and in several European countries. By 1970, he was working full-time as a metal sculptor. Even though he is familiar with current trends and techniques in art, he prefers to be an outsider artist, and has developed a style that is very much his own. ? Publications that have featured his work include: Holiday Magazine, Interior Design, Directions, Southern Living and others, including numerous newspapers. ?
