CLAUDE MONET (1840-1926), SNOW EFFECT WITH SETTING SUN, 1875, OIL ON CANVAS - CLAUDE MONET (1840-1926), SNOW EFFECT WITH SETTING SUN, 1875, OIL ON CANVAS Dimensions: Size: 42.5 x 60.5 cm. All measured values are approximate. Signature: Claude Monet Description: An atmospheric winter landscape depicting a snow-covered village beneath the warm glow of a setting sun. Low buildings and pitched rooftops extend across the middle distance, their surfaces covered in pale snow and articulated through touches of ochre, brown, gray, and muted yellow. Bare trees rise prominently along the left side of the composition, their dark, slender branches contrasting with the luminous orange, gold, lavender, and silvery tones of the evening sky. Broad and broken brushwork across the snow, architecture, and clouds creates a shifting interplay of reflected light and color, while a winding path leads the eye from the foreground toward the clustered buildings beyond. The lower right bears the signature ”Claude Monet.” The reverse retains two aged paper labels affixed to the upper stretcher, together with the wooden stretcher and exposed canvas. The composition is distinguished by the contrast between the cool snow-covered terrain and the warm illumination of the setting sky, creating a strong sense of transient winter atmosphere characteristic of Impressionist landscape painting.
