ATTR MORITZ OPPENHEIM OIL ON BOARD JEWISH SCHOLARS PAINTING - A 19th-century oil on board painting attributed to Moritz Daniel Oppenheim (German, 1800–1882), renowned as the first Jewish painter of the modern era to receive academic training and celebrated for his depictions of traditional Jewish cultural life. The intimate interior genre scene captures a multi-generational group of five Jewish figures gathered around a green-clothed table in deep study of religious texts, likely the Talmud or Torah. The highly detailed composition features two elder bearded men acting as teachers or guides, two younger men actively reading, and a young boy looking onward, all set within a shadowy domestic interior featuring a wooden staircase in the background. The artwork bears a partial signature in the lower right corner, which is further corroborated by a fragmented antique printed paper label on the verso reading ”MORITZ OPPENHEIM”. The painting is presented in a heavy, highly ornate period giltwood and gesso frame decorated with deep acanthus leaf foliate scrollwork and a beaded inner rim. Judaica, 19th-century German academic art, traditional Jewish genre scene, religious study, antique oil panel. Dimensions Frame 19 x 12 3/4 in. Image 12 3/8 x 6 1/8 in. Condition Stable antique condition. Painted surface shows fine craquelure, yellowed varnish, and minor dirt. The giltwood frame exhibits heavy wear, structural cracking, and gesso loss revealing plaster and wood beneath. Verso shows normal age oxidation and old label remnants.
