ATTR GEORGE HYDE POWNALL LONDON VIEW OIL PAINTING ON PANEL - This atmospheric oil on wood panel painting is attributed to English artist George Hyde Pownall (1876-1932) based on its stylistic execution and quintessential subject matter. The Impressionist composition depicts a misty, sunlit view of the Palace of Westminster (Parliament) situated along the River Thames in London. A tugboat emitting blue smoke and several smaller rowboats navigate the water in the foreground, rendered with visible impasto and textured, expressive brushwork. The artwork is presented unsigned on the recto. The verso of the wooden board bears a prominent handwritten chalk inscription reading ”ANDERSON” and a fragmented antique paper label with partial text referencing Birmingham. The painting is housed in a modern painted wood and fabric-lined frame secured with nails.
