ANTIQUE JAPANESE MEIJI SATSUMA SHIMAZU PORCELAIN PLATE - An antique Japanese Satsuma porcelain plate. Late Meiji period, before 1912. Lobulated piece with figurative rim. Hand-painted surface depicts a multi-figure scene of monks in landscape scenery. Richly garnished with gilding. Shimazu and Imperial mon crests, as well as artists signatures on the bottom. A translation of the signature into English is attached. Satsuma ware is a type of Japanese pottery which originated in Satsuma Province, since the 19th century it was mainly produced for Western export and therefore elaborately decorated.
