PIERRE DELORME FRENCH ENAMEL PLAQUE DUELING SCENE - Pierre Claude Francois Delorme (French, 1783–1859). Enamel painting on porcelain plaque. The piece depicts a group of six men in brightly colored Elizabethan outfits dueling each other with rapiers in a dark forest. The artwork refers to the Duel des Mignons which took place in Paris’s Tournelle Park on April 27, 1578, between the courtiers of King Henry III of France (the 'minions') and the supporters of the Duke of Guise (the 'Guises'). Signed lower right. Framed. Pierre Claude Francois Delorme was a French painter and printmaker. He studied art under Anne-Louis Girodet de Roussy-Trioson.
