MONUMENTAL 19TH C RUSSIAN ORTHODOX ICON OF ARCHANGEL GABRIEL - A monumental and finely executed 19th-century Imperial Russian Orthodox icon depicting the Holy Archangel Gabriel. Painted in the naturalistic, Westernized Academic style popular during the late Imperial period, the Archangel is rendered in a flowing blue mantle over a white tunic, holding a stem of white lilies (the traditional symbol of the Annunciation) while raising his right hand in greeting. A Cyrillic inscription above his halo reads ”С. Арх. Гавріилъ” (Holy Archangel Gabriel). The oil on wood panel is presented within its original, magnificent carved giltwood frame in the Slavic (Russian Revival) architectural style, featuring an arched top and flanked by stout, highly ornamented columns. The oil-painted surface exhibits widespread, stable craquelure consistent with 19th-century age, along with minor surface wear. The carved giltwood frame remains structurally sound with localized rubbing and minor wear to the gilding. The reverse of the panel retains its original structural splines, with modern hanging hardware and felt pads added later.
