ANTIQUE 19TH C RUSSIAN 84 SILVER ICON JOY OF ALL WHO SORROW - A magnificent 19th-century Russian Orthodox icon depicting the ”Mother of God, Joy of All Who Sorrow, ” complete with a solid silver oklad (riza) and its original glazed wooden kiot (presentation case). The icon is hand-painted in traditional egg tempera on wood, visible through the cutouts of the heavy, masterfully crafted silver cover. The silver features intricate repoussé floral borders and a pierced, gilded halo. The lower edge of the silver is fully hallmarked with the Moscow city mark (St. George), the 84 zolotnik standard mark, the maker's mark ”ИЗ”, and the assayer's mark ”A.C” (Aggey Svechin) above the date 1870. The solid silver oklad is free of major dents or tears and retains a lovely, unpolished patina with a bright gilded halo. The visible egg tempera painted elements are stable and beautifully preserved. The wooden kiot shows minor, age-appropriate exterior wear and scuffing, with the interior gilding remaining bright.
