LARGE 19TH C. RUSSIAN ICON RESURRECTION & 12 GREAT FEASTS - An impressive and large 19th-century Russian Orthodox icon depicting the Resurrection of Christ (The Descent into Hades) surrounded by the Twelve Great Feasts of the liturgical year. Hand-painted in traditional egg tempera and gold leaf over gesso (levkas) on a solid wood panel. The central Resurrection scene is framed by intricate miniature borders containing Cyrillic titles for each feast. The Border Scenes depict (Clockwise from Top Left): 1. The Nativity of the Mother of God; 2. The Presentation of the Mother of God; 3. The Annunciation; 4. The Nativity of Christ; 5. The Baptism of Christ (Theophany); 6. The Transfiguration; 7. The Exaltation of the Cross; 8. The Dormition of the Mother of God; 9. The Old Testament Trinity; 10. The Ascension; 11. The Entry into Jerusalem; 12. The Presentation of Christ in the Temple. Dimensions 19 x 15 1/2 in. The measurements are approximate. Condition Very good antique condition. The wood panel is stable with a natural, age-appropriate convex bow. The egg tempera and gold painted surface is beautifully preserved with rich, vibrant colors and minor, typical edge wear. Note: The reverse of the panel shows the traditional cut channels for the original wooden splines (shponki), which are absent. Modern hanging wire added to the reverse.
