RUSSIAN ICON RESURRECTION & FEASTS WITH KOVCHEG - An impressive antique Russian Orthodox icon depicting the Resurrection of Christ (Descent into Hades) surrounded by twelve finely painted narrative feast scenes. Executed in traditional egg tempera on a solid wood panel. Notably, the panel features a traditional kovcheg (a recessed central area), leaving a raised ochre margin (polya) finished with a classic red outer edge (luzga). The painting is rendered in a highly traditional, pre-schism style favored by Old Believer workshops, utilizing a rich palette of deep reds, ochres, and olive greens. The heavily varnished surface has developed a beautiful, deep craquelure over the centuries, offering an authentic and highly decorative surface patina.
