19TH C. RUSSIAN ICON THE FIERY ASCENT OF PROPHET ELIJAH - A vibrant and dynamic 19th-century Russian Orthodox icon depicting the Fiery Ascent of the Prophet Elijah. Executed in bright, saturated egg tempera on a traditional wood panel featuring a recessed central kovcheg. The dramatic central scene portrays Elijah ascending to heaven in a fiery red cloud, riding a chariot pulled by winged horses. Below him, the narrative unfolds with scenes from his life in the wilderness, concluding with his disciple Elisha reaching up to catch his falling mantle. The raised borders (polya) feature two finely painted standing family patron saints: St. Paraskeva on the left and St. Anna on the right. The upper border bears the stylized Cyrillic title of the feast. The egg tempera painted surface is remarkably bright and well-preserved, showing only minor, age-appropriate edge wear and fine craquelure. The reverse shows remnants of old paper labels and modern hanging wire. The original wooden splines (shponki) are absent.
