19TH C RUSSIAN VIRGIN OF THE SIGN ICON KOSTROMA SCHOOL - A late 19th-century Russian Orthodox wood panel icon depicting the Mother of God Virgin of the Sign, also known as Znamenie, attributed to the Kostroma school. Executed in egg tempera, gesso, and gold, the composition features the Virgin Mary in the traditional orans pose with her arms raised in prayer, centering the Emmanuel Christ Child within a circular medallion on her chest. The central figures are flanked by Saint Martha and the Apostle Matthew on the margins, all detailed with expressive facial features, rich earth-toned vestments, and bright gilded halos.
