RUSSIAN NATALIA GONCHAROVA LE COQ D'OR GOUACHE PAINTING - An original gouache on paper by Russian-French avant-garde artist Natalia Goncharova (1881–1962). Executed in the mid-1920s to early 1930s, the composition is a design for a wall-hanging based on the theme of the Ballets Russes production ”Le coq d'or.” The vividly colored work features two mythical birds with women's heads, characteristic of Russian folk tradition (such as the Sirin or Alkonost), set amongst stylized blue and red foliate scrolls on a yellow ground with a red border. The piece is signed ”N. Gontcharova” in the lower left corner. This exact painting is published and illustrated as Plate 529 (page 403) in Dr. Anthony Parton's authoritative book, ”Goncharova: The Art and Design of Natalia Goncharova.” Provenance includes the collection of Jon P. and Pamela J. Dorsey of Detroit, Michigan, which is also corroborated by the publication. The painting is housed in a modern metal frame with a brass artist plaque affixed to the lower edge. There is a prominent, visible horizontal tear and associated creasing on the left-center edge extending into the painted border. The paper exhibits mild age-related toning, though the painted pigments remain highly vibrant and opaque. The piece is framed under glass and has not been examined outside of the frame.
