VIATCHESLAV KALININ RUSSIAN TRIP TO JAPAN PASTEL DRAWING - An original pastel and pencil drawing on paper by Russian Postwar and Contemporary artist Viatcheslav Kalinin (1939–2022). Titled ”Trip to Japan” (Поездка в Японию), the complex, dynamic composition exemplifies Kalinin's Fantastic Irrealism style through a layered montage of stylized faces, figures, and architectural motifs. The piece is prominently signed in Cyrillic ”Калинин В.” and visibly dated ”1987” in the lower right, though exhibition literature officially catalogs the piece as 1978. The lower left includes the artist's Cyrillic title inscription alongside pseudo-calligraphic marks. Provenance is exceptionally strong, having been purchased at a Moscow auction in the 2000s and recently featured in the Denison Museum's ”Portraying Identity” exhibition (August 29 - November 29, 2024) as part of the Edward Khodorkovsky/AFUR collection. The artwork is presented in a blue frame equipped with a brass nameplate identifying the artist. The paper exhibits a very slight, natural waviness typical of the medium. The pastel and pencil lines remain vibrant and unsmudged. The work is framed under glass and has not been examined outside of its frame.
