Oleg Tselkov is known for his images of faces painted in bright color, depicting inner psychological patterns of violence in contemporary culture. By the 1960s he had become one of the most prominent and controversial figures in unofficial Soviet art, working alongside other leading nonconformists such as Erik Bulatov, Oscar Rabin, and Oleg Koulik. Facing pressure from Soviet authorities, he emigrated to Paris in 1977, where he lived and worked for the rest of his life.
