ANTIQUE RUSSIAN ICON OF VIRGIN MARY IN 84 SILVER FRAME - An antique Russian Orthodox icon depicting the Dormition Assumption of the Virgin Mary, dating to the late 19th century. The composition presents the Virgin Mary’s body surrounded by apostles and two bishops, while a standing Christ is shown receiving her soul rendered as a swaddled infant into the care of two angels ascending to heaven. Above Christ, a six winged seraph spreads its wings in a gesture of divine protection. The icon is hand painted in tempera with gold leaf on a gesso prepared wooden panel, featuring a recessed kovcheg. It is presented in an 84 silver frame, marked with a Russian silver standard hallmark and the manufacturers marks. A fine example of late 19th century Russian Orthodox devotional art, combining detailed iconography with a high quality silver oklad.
