ENGLISH MARINE OIL PAINTING BY WILLIAM MCALPINE - This dramatic 19th-century oil on canvas by listed British maritime artist William McAlpine (active 1840–1880) depicts a tall-masted ship ablaze and floundering on a choppy sea. The composition captures the vessel shrouded in thick plumes of dark smoke and central flames, with a longboat of sailors attempting a perilous escape in the foreground. Characteristic of McAlpine’s romanticized marine style, the work features a moody, expansive sky and meticulous detail in the rendering of the rigging and turbulent water. The painting is housed in a substantial mid-Victorian giltwood frame with ornate foliate moldings and a gold-painted slip.
