A RARE MEXICAN REVOLUTIONARY-ERA SWORD
Very rarely encountered, a type made for guerilla commanders of the revolutionary era during the Diaz Revolt (1876-1880,) likely in Oaxaca. The steel hilt well-forged, displaying Spanish Colonial characteristics; notably the small, cylindrical pommel and well-engraved cup with knucklebow placed above the guard. The grip of reeded bone. The fine, pipeback blade lightly curved and single-edged, with a small etched motif at the right forte, and the maker’s mark PDL for Peter D. Luneschloss at the left, made from 1822 to approximately 1850. In its leather scabbard, the separately applied leather locket with pierced leaf-work. Mid-19th century. Worn overall, blade with old rust, scabbard chape lacking. Overall length 95.2cm. Condition III
