בידספיריט | 19th Century Pennsylvania Dutch Butter
19th Century Pennsylvania Dutch Butter Press - This Burl wood butter press is an excellent example of 19th century primitive Pennsylvania Dutch culture. The top section features a deeply hand-carved, stylized six-petal star or hex flower inside a faint circular outline, which is a classic Pennsylvania fold art motif symbolizing good fortune and protection. The bottom circular cavity features prominent vertical ridges (resembling that of a butter paddle or washboard texture) meant to leave an institutional texture or portioning guide on the butter block. In 19th century farming households, these boards acted as signature branding marks. When farm families sold their butter at local Lancaster County markets, the unique motif identified the specific dairy maker to customers. It unique piece is carved from a single dense slab of native hardwood with a rich, authentic aged patina and an attached top iron ring for hanging. Measures approx. 13 3/4” x 8 1/2”.
