Bidspirit auction | Chinese Carved Chalcedony/Agate Guanyin &

Chinese Carved Chalcedony/Agate Guanyin & Boy - Chinese hand-carved chalcedony/agate figural sculpture depicting Guanyin (the Goddess of Mercy) accompanied by a young boy attendant. Rests on a custom-fitted pierced hardwood stand. Boy is shown holding small offering (possibly a peach) as is tradition for it symbolizes longevity and child-bearing blessings. Carving executed from highly translucent, banded grayish-white and honey-colored agate. Natural color zoning places honey-brown inclusions at crown, base of robes and boy's hand to create sharp visual contrasts. Drapery of robes exhibits characteristics of late Qing Dynasty to Republic period (late 19th century to mid-20th century) lapidary work. Incised details of woman's hair buns and facial features indicates quality workmanship rather than a more modern, mass-produced assembly. Stand is Chinese hardwood featuring floral openwork and silver-colored wire inlay. Very good condition. Very light, minor scuffing. Measures approx. 5”Lx3”Wx9.25”H. Bodhisattva. Condition: Absence of a condition statement does not imply the lot is in perfect condition, free from flaws, restoration, or the effects of aging/use.
