Bidspirit auction | American Mission Oak Library Cabinet
American Mission Oak Library Cabinet - 78 x 37.5 x 17 inches. This two piece library or office cabinet is constructed from quarter sawn oak, featuring prominent ray flake grain patterns characteristic of the American Arts and Crafts era. The piece follows a Mission style aesthetic with a rectilinear form and recessed panel construction. The upper section consists of a double door cupboard; each door contains four inset panels and is mounted on heavy brass toned barrel hinges. The cupboard interior is fitted with two adjustable shelves, creating three distinct storage levels. The top section is secured by a sliding bolt latch and a central keyed lock. The base section is a five drawer chest arranged in a two over two over one configuration. The drawers are built using dovetail joinery with secondary woods appearing to be pine or poplar. The cabinet is finished with a stepped cornice at the top and a flush base. The sides of both the top and bottom sections feature large recessed panels. The hardware consists of cast brass or bronze toned bail handles with rectangular backplates, and each drawer and the upper cabinet doors feature circular key escutcheons. The back panel of the upper section features handwritten notations in dark marker reading Room 204 224 and a partially obscured 2172.
