Bidspirit auction | US M1917 Steel Combat Helmet

US M1917 Steel Combat Helmet with Star - A United States military M1917 steel combat helmet, featuring the classic shallow bowl and wide, flat brim characteristic of the Great War era doughboy headgear. The exterior shell is finished in a textured olive drab paint, which shows significant aging and oxidation. Centered on the front of the bowl is a hand-painted white six-pointed star insignia. The paint of this insignia shows heavy crazing and wear consistent with the surrounding surface. The interior contains the original M1917 liner system. This consists of a black oilcloth headband secured to the shell by a series of canvas webbing straps that meet at a central drawstring. The internal crown pad is missing. The metal loops for the chin strap remain attached to the brim, though the leather strap itself is absent. Stamped characters are present on the underside of the brim, but they are not legible due to heavy surface oxidation and pitting.
