Bidspirit auction | Goodwin and Wilcox Stoneware Ovoid
Goodwin and Wilcox Stoneware Ovoid Jug - 9 inches tall. This stoneware jug features an early 19th-century ovoid form with a narrow mouth, a short neck, and a heavy, applied strap handle. The ceramic body is finished in a glossy, dark brown salt or Albany-type slip glaze, exhibiting characteristic orange peel texture and minor surface pitting throughout. A simple incised horizontal line decorates the shoulder, where an impressed mark reads N & WILCOX in capital block letters. The earlier portion of the mark is partially obscured by the glaze but corresponds to the Goodwin & Wilcox pottery of West Hartford, Connecticut. The flat base shows distinct concentric wire-cut marks from being removed from the potter's wheel. A fragment of a desiccated cork remains lodged within the mouth.
