Bidspirit auction | Hand Appliqued Floral Cotton Quilt

Hand Appliqued Floral Cotton Quilt - 58 x 76 inches. An American folk art quilt featuring a stylized floral motif, often identified as a tulip or lotus blossom. The quilt is constructed with hand-appliqued fabric pieces on a white cotton ground. The floral elements are arranged in seven vertical columns, with each blossom featuring two mirrored petals in a wide variety of solid-colored fabrics. Green hand-appliqued stems and leaves complete each floral unit. Vertical sashing strips, pieced from various scrap fabrics in solid colors, separate the columns. The floral elements are secured with visible hand-stitching in contrasting thread. The quilting is executed by hand in a utility style, following the contours of the floral shapes and stems throughout the piece. The reverse consists of a large-scale pieced white cotton fabric. The perimeter is finished with a multicolored binding made from varied fabric remnants. The presence of synthetic and cotton-polyester blend fabrics among the appliqued sections, noted for their specific texture and sheen, indicates a mid-to-late 20th-century production. No maker marks, signatures, or labels are present on the textile.
