Bidspirit auction | Cotton String Quilt with Sack
Cotton String Quilt with Sack Back - 65 x 79 inches. Feed sack quilt. A large handmade scrap quilt constructed with cotton fabric and batting. The quilt top features a string-pieced pattern, a variant of the crazy quilt style, arranged in vertical columns. These columns are separated by various printed fabric sashing strips, including floral, geometric, and polka dot patterns typical of the 1930s through the 1950s. A notable visual feature is a prominent vertical blue sashing strip that is interrupted by a segment of solid red fabric. The quilting is executed by hand in a series of parallel diagonal and horizontal lines. The reverse of the quilt is fashioned from multiple repurposed commercial cotton bags. A printed mark in blue-gray ink is visible on the lower section of the backing (photo 5). The legible portions of the mark include the characters FEED, PROPERLY MINERALIZED, and CO. fragments of MANUFACTURED BY are also visible, though the specific manufacturer name is obscured by fabric texture and quilting stitches. Another section of the backing shows diagonal tan stripes (photo 6). The quilt is finished with a thin light-colored binding.
