Bidspirit auction | 2 Matchbook Albums & Ephemera

2 Matchbook Albums & Ephemera - This lot consists of a collection of matchbook covers housed in two specialized albums. The albums are constructed from black pebbled faux-leather with spiral-bound and ring-bound metal combs. One album features gold-tone lettering on the front reading Twin-Slit Book Match Cover Collection, while the other is stamped TWIN-SLIT ALBUM for MATCH BOOK COVERS. The internal pages are made of heavy-weight gray and tan paper featuring pre-cut corner slits designed to hold flattened matchbook covers without the use of adhesive. The collection includes a diverse range of advertising ephemera primarily from the 1930s and 1940s, focusing on businesses in the American Midwest and Northeast. Notable geographic locations represented include Cleveland, Ohio; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and New York City. The covers advertise a variety of industries, including hotels such as the Waldorf-Astoria, the Hotel Mark Twain, and the Hotel Amsterdam; restaurants and bars like Blue Boar Cafeterias and the 19th Hole Grill; and transportation services including Greyhound Lines and Wright Aircraft Engines. Specific printed marks on various covers identify manufacturers such as THE OHIO MATCH CO. WADSWORTH, OHIO, THE DIAMOND MATCH CO. N.Y.C., UNIVERSAL MATCH CORP., and LION MATCH CO. NEW YORK. One cover for a Masonic Auditorium ceremonial event is explicitly dated November 30th, 1934. The collection also includes illustrated covers for products like Coca-Cola, Atlantic Ale and Beer, and Johnson's Wax, as well as political campaign covers for candidates such as Herbert L. Smith.
