Neoclassical Repousse Helmeted Plaque - A large antique repouss? metal wall plaque featuring a neoclassical profile of a helmeted figure, likely depicting a historical or mythological subject such as Alexander the Great or Perseus. The central relief is rendered in high relief against a heavily hammered ground. The figure is shown wearing an ornate helmet decorated with scrollwork and a high crest, with a tunic collar featuring an incised Greek key or meander pattern. The central image is bordered by a recessed olive-green velvet liner. The wide, integral metal frame is decorated with repeating motifs of flowering branches and fruit, including pears and peaches, set upon a stippled background. The plaque is constructed from sheet metal, likely copper with a brass-toned patinated finish, wrapped around a substantial wooden frame and secured with small metal tacks on the reverse. An early wire hanger is attached to the back of the wooden support. Measurements: 24 x 24 in.
