Mid-19th C. Amer. Painted Boston Rocker - An American rocking chair in the Boston Rocker style, constructed from wood and dating to the mid-19th century. The chair features a high back with a wide, shaped crest rail above a central vase-shaped splat flanked by two curved outer spindles. It has a deeply contoured scoop seat and sits on four turned legs joined by a box stretcher, all mounted on two curved wooden rockers. The chair is finished in black paint and decorated with stenciled gilt-tone floral and foliate motifs on the crest rail and central splat. The joinery is traditional mortise and tenon. No maker's marks, stamps, or brands are visible on the wood.
