Shorter & Son Crown Devon Toby Jug - An English glazed earthenware character jug produced by Shorter and Son and marketed under the Crown Devon brand. The vessel is modeled as a full standing male figure in 18th-century attire, with a black tricorn-style hat forming the rim and pouring spout. The figure is depicted with a white powdered wig, wearing a long red coat over a buttoned yellow waistcoat, black breeches, and black shoes, standing upon a textured brown base. The figure holds a small mug in his right hand and a black pipe in his left hand. The underside of the base (photo 5) contains impressed characters reading SHORTER and ENGLAND in an arched format, with the characters M/S in the center. A green printed backstamp is also visible, featuring a crown above a circular banner inscribed CROWN DEVON, with MADE IN ENGLAND printed below it. Height: 8.5 inches.
