Japanese Metal Landscape Smoking Set - This set is constructed from cast patinated non-ferrous metal and depicts a traditional Japanese landscape. The primary base is cast in high relief to show a mountainous scene including Mt. Fuji, pine trees, and cherry blossoms. The set includes three removable components. To the left is a two-story temple box featuring a removable roof-form lid and two nesting interior metal trays, one of which includes cigarette rests. Centered is a match holder modeled as a traditional arched bridge with an open top. To the right, a circular recessed area holds a removable copper bowl liner and an openwork metal cover decorated with a relief-cast dragon motif and two cigarette rests. The underside of the main landscape base is cast with two embossed characters in Japanese script reading ?? (Nikko), referring to the historic city and shrine complex. The base of the copper bowl features a faint, impressed square mark containing four characters that are not legible due to oxidation and wear. Dimensions: 7.5 in high.
