Mid-20th C. Orange Peel Pattern Cotton Quilt Top - 62 x 74 An unfinished American quilt top featuring an Orange Peel pattern, also known as Flower Petal or Lafayette Orange Peel. The piece is hand-pieced and hand-appliqued, constructed from diverse scrap cotton fabrics on a plain-weave white cotton ground. The patches consist of various feedsack and calico prints typical of the 1930s and 1940s, including floral patterns, polka dots, stripes, ginghams, and geometric motifs. The blocks are joined with decorative green cross-stitch embroidery along the seam lines. The design consists of interlocking four-petal floral shapes created by the curved patches meeting at central points. The underside reveals the hand-stitching and the extent of the staining. The outer edges are raw and unfinished.
