The Torsion Balance Co. Style 2-76 Precision Scale - An antique precision torsion balance scale manufactured by The Torsion Balance Company of New York. The unit is housed in a rectangular hardwood case featuring a hinged lid with an inset glass viewing window. The top working surface is composed of polished black glass with a centrally located circular aperture revealing a vertical needle indicator and a graduated scale for precision measurement. A brass manufacturer label is affixed to the front of the case and provides the following information: THE TORSION BALANCE CO. NEW YORK / STYLE 2-76 No. B 72352 / CAPACITY 4 OZ CLASS A / MADE IN U.S.A. / APPROVED TYPE PENNA SERIES NO J. The scale is accompanied by a set of four pans, consisting of two shallow brass pans with circular finger tabs and two smaller, deeper silver-toned metal pans. A knurled metal adjustment knob is located at the center base of the front panel, flanked by leveling screws. This type of balance was standard equipment in pharmacies and laboratories for highly accurate measurements.
