An 18th or 19th Century Indo-Persian Iron Kulah Khud Helmet - This helmet is an example of an Indo-Persian or Ottoman Kulah Khud, dating from the late 18th to the 19th century. The helmet features a hemispherical bowl forged from iron or steel. At the apex is a tall, faceted conical spike mounted on a circular base. The front of the bowl is fitted with a sliding, adjustable nasal guard held by a riveted bracket; the bar has a flattened, leaf-shaped lower terminal and is currently curved back over the top of the helmet. Two small tubular plume holders are located on the forehead area. The surface of the bowl is decorated with incised and chased ornamentation consisting of calligraphic cartouches and foliate motifs. Attached to the lower rim is an aventail, or neck guard, made of butted iron chainmail rings. The mail is arranged to hang in several pointed sections across the back and sides.
