”ודי בזיון וחרפות יהיה בשביל היהדות החרדית כולה” A letter from R’ Meir Shapiro for the completion of Yeshivas Chachmei Lublin — 1925 A heartfelt letter from the ksav yad of R’ Meir Shapiro, Av Beis Din and Rosh Yeshivah of Yeshivas Chachmei Lublin, addressed to R’ Yosef Carlebach, asking him to intercede with the philanthropists of Hamburg to help complete the construction of the great yeshivah. In the letter, R’ Shapiro writes with pain that if the building is not completed soon, it will bring embarrassment: “…v’day bizayon v’charafos yihyeh bishvil haYahadus haChareidis kulah…” The letter is dated 25 Tammuz 1925 and bears his signature! . R’ Yehudah Meir Shapiro (1884–1934), founder and Rosh Yeshivah of Chachmei Lublin, was one of the foremost gedolim of the pre-war generation, who raised a banner of Torah through his famed yeshivah and many initiatives.
