Polemical letter by Rabbi Yehoshua HaLevi Grosspfog of France to Rabbi Shmuel Greenberg. Strasbourg, 1930. - Moving and impassioned letter by Rabbi Yehoshua HaLevi Grosspfog, editor of the Jewish newspaper “LA TRIBUNE JUIVE” in France, to Rabbi Shmuel Greenberg. Strasbourg, 1930. In the letter, Rabbi Yehoshua HaLevi Grosspfog laments the state of Judaism in France, as well as the many internal disputes among Jews, writing that “at the very time when the nations in the lands of France and Ashkenaz strive peacefully to suppress their hatred among themselves, our Jews here—even our Chareidim—are far from extending a hand to their ‘enemy’ brethren in Ashkenaz; this is transplanted Western Chareidi Judaism! How great is the pain!” He further continues to lament these matters and the condition of Shabbat in his country. The recipient, Rabbi Shmuel Greenberg , was among the leading rabbis of Berlin. He also served as an instructor at the Rabbinical Seminary of Rabbi Azriel Hildesheimer in Berlin and at the universities of Giessen and Berlin, and was ordained as a rabbi and received a doctorate in philosophy. In his later years, he immigrated to Eretz HaKodesh. One leaf on official letterhead of the newspaper “LA TRIBUNE JUIVE.” 23 × 28 cm. Small tear along fold lines without loss; light stains.
