Original Oil on Paper Non Objective NORMAN LEWIS (?), 1950s
This is a fascinating piece of art -an oil on paper- attributed to or in the manner of Norman Wilfred Lewis. Given the attribution (in pencil on the back) to this artist, it is important to note that attributing artwork can sometimes be challenging, especially if there is not fron signature or direct documentation. The fact that it's in the manner of Lewis suggests a stylistic resemblance, but it might not be conclusively his work. Norman Lewis, as an Abstract Expressionist, was known for his exploration of color, including a focus on the esthetic qualities of the color black. Our guess it is a 1950s - 1960s creation.

Norman Lewis Born in New York City, Norman Lewis was an Abstract Expressionist painter and art teacher. He studied art at Columbia University and became was a junior high school art teacher in New York, a supervisor of the art center at A & T Col & Bennett College, and also taught art in many other places including the Art Students League.
, br/>An African-American artist, he explored the esthetic qualities of the color black. He also painted in bright colors. His associates in New York were Lionel Feininger, Mark Tobey and Morris Graves. Although he had much respect from these contemporaries, his reputation did not remain strong.

The provenance is from the estate of a deceased collector in South Florida.

The size of the artwork (Approx. 13.5" x 10") is a good reference point for understanding its scale and visual impact. Smaller works can sometimes be more intimate and detailed.
