Sefer Yesod: Urim VeTumim. Karlsruhe, 1775-1777. First Edition by Rabbi Yehonatan Eibeshitz. Two Parts- Signature of the gaon Rabbi Israel Hirsch ben Yehuda Zelki of Lissa. - Both volumes of the acclaimed sefer “Tumim” which encompasses a comprehensive, foundational commentary on the laws of Choshen Mishpat (Ch. 1-152) by “the Rebbe Rebbi Yehonasan Eibschitz”, Av Beis Din of Metz. First Edition. Karlsruhe, 1775-1777. Since its original printing exactly 250 years ago, there has hardly been a Torah scholar or halachic composition that did not reference the words of Rabbi Yehonasan Eibschitz in his beloved “Tumim”, which discusses the most complex and intricate sugyos in Choshen Mishpat! The sefer is designed with the text of the Shulchan Aruch in the center of the page; the Urim commentary which presents a brief explanation that illuminates the words of the Shulchan Aruch on the inner side of the page; and on the external side, the longer Tumim commentary which supplement and illuminate the words of the Shulchan Aruch. Signature of the gaon Rabbi Israel Hirsch ben Yehuda Zelki of Lissa (-1827). [Some have written that this is the signature of the holy gaon Rabbi Israel Zvi Hirsch Lipiner of Grodzisk, Av Beit Din of the major communities of Grodzisk and Obersitz in the region of Poznań; a disciple of the great Maggid of Mezritch and Mechutan of the holy Rebbi Elimelech of Lizhensk, as the father-in-law (in his first marriage) of Rebbi Elazar of Lizhensk. And father of the holy Rabbi Yehuda Zelki of Sanz. However, in our humble opinion this is incorrect, and the signature belongs to a different gaon with a similar name and patronymic—perhaps they were related.] An early ownership inscription of the groom Kalonymus Kalman, son of R. Shalom Nathan. An early signature: “the humble Moshe Aryeh of the house of …” Rabbi Jonathan Eybeschütz composed his works on the Shulchan Aruch, but merited to publish only the first part of Kereti u-Pleti on Yoreh De‘ah, printed in 1764. After his passing, his grandson Rabbi Israel Eybeschütz continued publishing his writings; he printed the present work, the second part of Kereti u-Pleti, and additional works of his illustrious grandfather.
