With several important early manuscript annotations. 154 leaves. 19 cm. The author, Rabbi Yosef Samiga, was born in Salonika. He served as head of a yeshiva in Padua and later as rabbi of the city of Venice, where he was among the leading rabbinic authorities. He is best known for his book Mikra’ei Kodesh on ethics and the reasons for the commandments, which was warmly received by the community of scholars and appeared in several editions. His work Porat Yosef is cited by the Maharsha in his novellae! He is also known for his dispute with Rabbi Menachem Azariah of Fano (the Ramʿa of Fano) concerning the laws of waving the lulav. In addition, he was involved in the controversy over the presumption of priestly status (Cḥezkat kehunah) of descendants of conversos, and in the affair of the moneylenders of Ferrara. He conducted halachic correspondence with Rabbeinu Chaim Shabtai (Responsa Maharachash, vol. I no. 91; vol. III no. 53). Among his renowned students were the gaon Rabbi Chaim Benveniste, author of Knesset ha-Gedolah, and the gaon Rabbi Yosef Shlomo Delmedigo, “Yashar of Candia.”
