Vienna, 1824. On the front flyleaf is an ownership inscription in the handwriting of his stepson, R. Yissachar Berish Orenstein [son of the Gaon Rabbi Chaim Avraham Orenstein, Av Beit Din of Bardejov; after whose passing Rabbeinu the Maharam Schick married his widow in his second marriage]. “This holy sefer belongs to the honor of my master, my stepfather, the Gaon, the illustrious and renowned, holy lamp, pious and saintly, our teacher and Rabbi Moshe Schick, may he live long, Av Beit Din here in Chust. His disciple and son-in-law who drinks thirstily from his holy words, the humble Yissachar Berish, son of the Gaon R. Chaim Avraham, of blessed memory, Orenstein of Bartfeld.” At the top of the first page appears the signature : “The earth is the Lord’s and its fullness – the humble Joseph, son of the Maharam Schick, of blessed memory.” Rabbi Joseph Schick was born to his father, the Maharam Schick, in 1835 , when the latter was living in Halicz. He was born in 1866 and was circumcised by his grandfather the Maharam Schick, as recorded in the latter’s mohel notebook: “22 Sivan 1866 – I circumcised the child Aharon Chaim, son of my son R. Joseph, may his light shine; I also served as sandek.” He is mentioned in his father’s introduction to Responsa Maharam Schick, Yoreh De’ah (1881), “my second son, the distinguished Aharon Chaim, may he live long, ” and in his introduction to the Maharam Schick’s commentary on Tractate Avot (1890), “my chosen son, outstanding in Torah and fear of Heaven, Chaim, may his light shine.” The Gaon Rabbi Yissachar Berish Orenstein was a great Torah scholar and widely renowned as God-fearing. He studied with his stepfather, our master, for seven years. He married the daughter of R. Eliezer Shimshovitz of Bedevla, one of the elders of the Hasidim of the Tzemach Tzaddik of Vizhnitz. So strong was the desire of his father-in-law that his new son-in-law should also bask in the shadow of the Tzemach Tzaddik like his previous sons-in-law, that when he traveled for Rosh Hashanah he took him along and seated him near the Rebbe. During the Musaf prayer, R. Berish felt unwell and vomited profusely. When the Tzemach Tzaddik finished his prayers, he asked him, “How do you feel now?” R. Berish replied, “You have cleansed my innards, and now I feel like a true Hasid of the Rebbe.” Thereafter, R. Berish left his family and traveled to Vizhnitz, where he studied in chavruta with the Saba Kaddisha of Vizhnitz and with his brother, the holy Rebbe Chaim of Ottynia . Only once every six months would he return home. Even when the Saba Kaddisha served as Av Beit Din in Bedevla, he continued studying with him. He was counted among the “lions of the group” in the circle of the Viznitz Rebbe all his life. Several signatures of the renowned Gaon Rabbi Shmuel David HaKohen Friedman appear here [one of them apparently from the village of Hrabanitz [Verkhnya Hrabivnytsya] , where he married in his first marriage in 1874]. He was born in 1858 to his father the Gaon Rabbi Tzvi. He frequented the court of Rabbi Chaim of Sanz, who instructed his father that since he was exceptionally gifted, he should be married at a young age. Indeed, at age twelve he became engaged to the righteous maiden Tzipora in the village of Hrabanitz. Due to his tender age, however, his parents sent him to study in the yeshiva of the Maharam Schick in Chust, where he even recorded his teacher’s lectures. From there he continued to the yeshiva of the Yitav Lev in Sighet. He also spent time in the presence of the holy Divrei Yechezkel of Shinova. Around 1877 he began his rabbinic career as a dayan in the city of Verecke near the above-mentioned village of Hrabanitz. Around 1890 he was invited by the leaders of the Chust community to serve as their dayan and halachic authority. He became renowned as a decisive halachic authority, was deeply involved in permitting agunot, and was praised by the leading sages of the generation.
