Signature of the Holy Gaon Rabbi Moshe HaKohen, Av Beit Din of Przemyśl and Medzhybizh, author of Pnei Moshe and Mateh Moshe, nephew of the Semichat Chachamim. - Midrash Bereishit Rabbah, with the commentary Yefeh To’ar by Rabbi Shmuel Yaffe Ashkenazi. An impressive early rabbinic signature appears on the title page:“ …The young Moshe, son of my father, my master Rabbi Yeshayah HaKohen, may his light shine, of the holy community of Przemyśl, and the holy community of Medzhybizh.” His autograph and signature are extremely rare! and not known from any other source. The holy gaon and Kabbalist Rabbi Moshe HaKohen, author of Pnei Moshe (Wilhermsdorf, 1716), was published with approbations including that of the gaon, author of Semichat Chachamim, who refers to him as “the son of brother, the great luminary Rabbi Moshe Katz, ” along with the endorsements of eleven leading Polish sages. He also authored several very rare works, including: Keren Or (Zolkiew, 1721), Derush Moshe (Zolkiew, 1741), Yad Moshe (Zolkiew, 1743), Ohel Moshe (Zolkiew, 1754), and Mateh Moshe (Zolkiew, 1745). [Many have mistakenly confused him with another Rabbi Moshe, son of Rabbi Avraham, who also served as Av Beit Din of Przemyśl and also authored a work titled Mateh Moshe, but he was not a Kohen]. From the approbation: “The sefer now completed had already begun printing in the year 1689… but due to the many tribulations that befell us (namely, the fire that broke out in Prague), they were unable to complete the work.
