A Silver Niello Snuff Box, Belonging to Rabbi Eliezer Silver. - This historically significant silver snuff box belonged to Rabbi Eliezer Silver, one of the foremost rabbinic leaders of American Jewry in the 20th century. Born in Lithuania in 1882, Rabbi Silver studied in Dvinsk under the legendary Rogatchover Gaon, Rabbi Yosef Rosen, and received rabbinic ordination from Rabbi Chaim Ozer Grodzensky of Vilna. In 1907, he and his wife emigrated to the United States. From 1907 to 1925, he served as rabbi of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; from 1925 to 1931 in Springfield, Massachusetts; and in 1931, he became the rabbi of Cincinnati, Ohio, where he remained until his passing in 1968. Rabbi Silver was a dynamic leader who left an indelible mark on Jewish communal life in America. He served as President of the Union of Orthodox Rabbis of the U.S. and Canada, was a key founder of Agudath Israel of America, and also played a foundational role in Ezras Torah. At the outbreak of World War II, he convened an emergency meeting in New York that led to the formation of the Vaad Hatzalah (Rescue Committee), with Rabbi Silver as its president. He spearheaded its efforts to rescue European Torah scholars and, in October 1943, helped organize and lead a historic march of more than 400 rabbis in Washington, D.C., urging the U.S. government to take decisive action to save European Jewry. The snuff box itself is rectangular with softly rounded edges. The underside is decorated with geometric motifs at center, flanked by foliate swags and framed with pockmarked borders. The hinged lid is engraved with a detailed depiction of a state building, also bordered by foliate swags and harmonious borders. It may well have been presented to Rabbi Silver at one of his many meetings with American political leaders.
