A Remarkable Dollar from the Lubavitcher Rebbe – 28th of Nissan, Fast Day Substitution - This rare and meaningful dollar was received from the holy hands of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, on the 28th day of Nissan in the early 1990s—a day of unusual spiritual and halachic significance. In response to the tense and dangerous situation facing the Land of Israel at that time, the Rebbe—together with the agreement of prominent rabbinic authorities—established a special fast day on the 28th of Nissan. This was a rare step for the Rebbe, who generally refrained from issuing halachic rulings of this nature. To accommodate those unable to fast, the Rebbe suggested an alternate path of spiritual participation: they should give tzedakah equivalent to the value of three meals and recite three chapters of Tehillim (Psalms). To this end, the Rebbe distributed dollar bills to such individuals, with the clear instruction that they fulfill these acts in lieu of fasting, thereby granting them a share in the day’s spiritual merit. On this particular dollar, the Chassid who received it inscribed in clear handwriting: “3 Meals, 3 Kapitlach Tehillim, כ”ח ניסן” — a moving personal notation reflecting the Rebbe’s directive and the individual’s spiritual mission for that day. This dollar stands as a unique artifact, representing the Rebbe’s deep concern for Eretz Yisrael, his sensitivity to individual circumstances, and his unwavering belief in the power of Torah, prayer, and charity to transform reality.
