Drash Moshe – Only Edition, Venice 1603 – Includes an Eulogy for Rabbi Yosef Karo. - Sefer Drash Moshe, a collection of sermons on the Torah, for various occasions and eulogies, authored by Rabbi Moshe Alvilda. Only edition. Venice, 1603. Printed by Giovanni Di Gara. On leaf 103, there is a sermon for Parashat Balak, titled: “Upon the News of the Passing of the Gaon Rabbi Yosef Karo z”l in the Holy City of Safed, which occurred on the 13th of Tammuz, 1585.” Among other things, the eulogy includes the following: “We ought to be deeply moved by the passing of this great Rabbi, who gave us life and sustained us through his great work, the Beit Yosef…This perfect man, who was our leader and the light of our eyes… It is fitting to mourn him… and I have lamented over the city of Safed… For with the death of this perfect one, a great darkness fell upon them.” [6], 125 Leaves. 28.6 cm. The Author: Rabbi Moshe Alvilda (approx. 1500–1583), was born in Spain during the time of the expulsion. In 1492, he fled to Greece, where he served as Rabbi in the communities of Arta, Avlona, and Salonika. Among his works are Olat Tamid, Drash Moshe, Reishit Da’at, and more. His seforim were highly regarded, and are cited with reverence by the Shela HaKadosh, who wrote: “The wise scholar Rabbi Moshe Alvilda already brought in his sefer Sha'arei Dema’...” (Shela, Ten Discourses, Fifth Discourse).
