Vienna, 1822. First edition of ”Shalom Yerushalayim” on the Jerusalem Talmud. Includes approbations from the ”Chatam Sofer, ” Rabbi Mordechai Benet, and others in the first part. On the title page is the signature and stamps of the Gaon Rabbi Gershon Stern (1861–1936), Av Beit Din of Maros-Ludash and its surrounding regions, and one of the prominent rabbis of Hungary. He was the son-in-law and disciple of Rabbi Amram Blau, author of ”Shu”t Beit Sha'arim.” He studied in Mad under the ”Kol Aryeh, ” in Khust under the ”Mahram Schick” , and in Mattersdorf under the ”Chatan Sofer.” In 1885, at the age of just 24, he was appointed Av Beit Din of Maros-Ludash, a position he held for over 50 years until his passing. He founded and headed for many years a large yeshiva in his city of Ludash, from which many great Torah scholars emerged, with many of them serving in rabbinic positions. He became famous for his rich language, clarity, and eloquence, drawing large audiences to his lessons and sermons. He authored many seforim, but is primarily known for his major work, ”Yalkut HaGershuni, ” ten volumes on Tanach, Aggadot of the Talmud, Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim and Yoreh De'ah, Pirkei Avot, and a collection of halachic rulings arranged alphabetically.
