Copy of the Holy Admor Rebbi Avraham Mordechai Alter of Gur-the Imrei Emes. - Sefer Shaar Shimon, by Rabbi Shimon Segal of Lissa, brother in law & disciple of Rabbi Akiva Eger. Warsaw 1885. Stamped ”Avraham Mordechai Alter from Gur” & space for a shelf number. A rare survivor of his most famous library. The Holy Admor Rebbi Avraham Mordechai Alter (1866-1948) was third Gerer rebbe. He was a pious genius, and the son of the Sfat Emet. He founded Agudath Israel and was one of the great leaders of haredi Jewry before the Holocaust, with tens of thousands of chassidim in Poland. The Imrei Emes of Gur amassed a collection of seforim and manuscripts forming a library that was regarded as one of the largest privately held Jewish libraries in the world. However the library endured more than its share of troubles. In 1901, a fire erupted in the town of Gur destroying most of the library, yet the Imrei Emes did not despair and set to the task of rebuilding and expanding it. The second loss occurred during World War II when his entire sacred library was destroyed or lost. Fair condition, title page detached, tears to first few pages, brittle paper, tear to margins, original binding.
