GERMAN WWI LIONHEAD ULAN (UHLAN) OFFICER'S SWORD - Ca. 1915 AD A ‘lionhead’ officer's sword from the First World War which once belonged to an officer in a Ulan (or Uhlan) cavalry regiment, a form of light cavalry whose primary weapon was the lance. This is a ‘jawless’ or ‘half-headed lion’ variation, so-called because the lion head on the pommel has no lower jaw. The handle is wrapped with brown leather and the brass hilt retains some gilt. The guard and hilt are decorated with floral designs and military paraphernalia, including a pair of crossed Ulan lances atop a laurel on the langet. The blade is plain and slightly curved and the scabbard is metal with two suspension rings.
